This course provides a non-technical overview of Bitcoin and decentralized ledgers (blockchains) as currency and as payment systems. The course acts as a starting point for anyone who is new to Bitcoin and wants to learn the fundamentals of its operations, both as technology and as a payment system. By the end of the course, you should be able to understand how digital currencies are designed and operate, as well as how they disrupt conventional payment systems. The course does not require any prior knowledge of computer science or programming.

Learning Objectives
The objectives for this course are:

  • Understand the main functions of currency and be able to apply them when analyzing various types of historical, current or future currencies
  • Understand, from a monetary perspective, how Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, is designed
  • Understand how decentralized ledgers may affect conventional payments
